The fight against HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, pneumonia, diarrhea, family health, vaccine preventable diseases is an ongoing global concern. In developing countries, majority of the population lie outside the reach of urban health care institutions and can only be reached by front-line health care workers from community health programs and other government initiated outreaches. In such situations the diagnosis, ongoing observation and treatment of affected patients faces significant challenges including patient identification, access to information on prior encounters, treatments, other health conditions, and stage of current treatment plan. Further, most programs such as HIV-control programs, tuberculosis-control programs etc., are often run in isolation, while other family health conditions, including maternal and child health are addressed independently. The efficacy of programs can be increased by the proper use of supporting technology that lends itself to low-cost, widespread deployment, ease of use by minimally educated personnel, and capable of use in remote locations that do not depend on network connectivity, etc. An integrated, collaborative approach to rural health development is possible if it is well supported by a software system that facilitates such collaboration. There must be an efficient way to collect field data into a central repository for accurate assessment of health programs, as well as to assist in future planning.
